Notzurazumi
Beach stones
360cm x 200cm x 80cm
Built in the style of a traditional Japanese stone wall, this piece challenges our notion of place by locating a partial structure out of its architectural context.
In conversation with the pre-modern work of the Anoshu Stonemasons, the structure employs craft techniques of notzuratzumi, an architectural method that relies on untreated natural rock, and the sangitzumi style of cornerstone stacking.
The piece recognizes the inherent value of found natural materials and creates harmony through structure.
