Transience
Salt from Portobello seawater, tidal stones
120cm x 40cm x 30cm

The piece is a meditation on the Buddhist concept of transience, a recognition of the temporariness of all things, and built in the style of a Japanese rock garden.
Inspired by the area’s historic salt production, we spent two weeks distilling salt from Portobello seawater and gathered stones from the nearby Joppa salt pans.
The installation was built at low tide, and as the ocean rose, it gradually submerged the piece, reclaiming the salt and the stones.
Its design reflects the view from Portobello Beach, where the stones represented nearby Inchkeith Island and Berwick Law.
